Prof. Udalski is a leading Polish astronomer and astrophysicist. He is the head of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE). The OLGE long term goal is to search for the dark matter using microlensing phenomena. As a byproduct the OGLE team discovered several extrasolar planets. Prof Udalski is also working in many other astrophysical areas like the Galactic disk studies, the search for free-floating black holes, the search for Pluto size dwarf planets from the Kuiper Belt, studies of variable stars and microlensing in the Magellanic Clouds.
Vilnius University, Lithuania
Prof. Siksnys is a prominent scientist in the field of protein-DNA interactions. In his research he is mainly focused on structure and function of proteins interacting with DNA and being a part of the bacterial defence system against foreign nucleic acids. As a result of his work he obtained one of the first international patents for programmable DNA endonuclease Cas9 from CRISPR/Cas system. The Cas9 tool is now a leading technology used in modification of eukaryotic genomes.

On October 25 2013, the Opening of the Academic Year 2013/2014 was held at Biocentrum Ochota. The PhD students of IIMCB organized the ceremony with the invited keynote speakers, prof. Gottfried Schatz, prof. Ineke Braakman and a special guest, the co-recipient of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, prof. Brian Kobilka.
